Position Summary:
The AI & Data Foundations Intern will support the Business Intelligence team in preparing data for future AI and advanced analytics initiatives by improving data quality, documentation, governance, and exploration. Reporting to the Director of Business Intelligence, the intern will assess data readiness, enhance data reliability, and research practical AI use cases within credit union operations, making this role ideal for someone interested in AI who wants to build strong data fundamentals.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist in assessing data quality, completeness, consistency, and usability across key data sources
- Support data cleansing, normalization, and validation efforts
- Help document data definitions, business rules, and data lineage
- Identify gaps or risks in data that may limit future AI or analytics use
- Perform exploratory data analysis to uncover trends, anomalies, and opportunities
- Build basic dashboards or reports to visualize data health and business insights
- Assist in defining key metrics and KPIs relevant to credit union operations
- Research AI and automation use cases applicable to financial services and credit unions
- Help evaluate organizational readiness for AI adoption (data, tools, processes)
- Assist in prioritizing AI opportunities based on feasibility, risk, and business value
- Support proof-of-concept planning (not necessarily model development
- Learn and support data governance, privacy, and security standard
- Ensure data handling aligns with regulatory and internal compliance requirements
- Assist with documenting controls and best practices for future AI initiatives
- Work with business and technical teams to understand data usage and challenges
- Create clear documentation, summaries, and presentations for leadership
- Communicate findings in a business-friendly, non-technical manner
Skills & Qualifications
- Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Information Systems, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related field
- Basic experience with data analysis tools (Excel, SQL, or Python preferred)
- Understanding of data structures and relational databases
- Familiarity with data visualization tools (Power BI or Tableau a plus)
- Interest in AI, machine learning, and automation (hands-on experience not required)
- Strong curiosity and willingness to learn
- Analytical mindset with attention to detail
- Ability to ask thoughtful questions and challenge assumptions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in financial services, data governance, or analytics strategy
- Hands-on experience preparing enterprise data for AI and advanced analytics
- Exposure to real-world challenges of AI adoption in a regulated environment
